Sally’s Desk
Building a Business on Dog Hair
by Sally Liddick

This year Barkleigh posted a milestone. Albeit an unusual one, it has been fullfilling to me. Judy Ramey, our tireless managing editor of Groomer to Groomer, retired after eighteen years. Judy and I worked very close over the years, putting every GTG together.

Even though we will all miss her… I kidded her that she was the only person who could translate “Sally-eze” to the other art staff, I fully understand her desire to kick back and enjoy life a little.

Why is this a milestone to me? It is because Judy is the first full time staffer to retire from our business. This means that I must have done something right. This business, built on dog hair, has provided a meaningful living to another person. And I have a lot more people in this business, that trust dog hair enough every day to come to work and pick up a paycheck every two weeks.
Dog hair has provided a living for me since I was 22. My mother started her grooming business called Shear Heaven Dog Grooming in 1956. She raised me through my elementary and teenage years on dog hair. Even when my dad was out of work, dog hair provided meals on the table and a roof over our heads. At 22, I inherited the dog hair business, and it provided needed cash for my family for fifteen years, until I began Barkleigh. Times were lean sometimes, but dog hair always came through.

My husband never truly trusted dog hair. When Barkleigh was growing, I wanted him to quit work at the warehouse and work for Barkleigh. “I don’t want to put all our eggs in one basket,” he chided. But guess who was sometimes looking for work? It wasn’t me! Dot.com companies came and went. Large corporations collapsed. But dog hair continued to offer me a stable living for going on thirty six years now.

Your business is built on dog hair, too. Thank the Good Lord everyday for putting hair on dogs. He was wonderful in his wisdom, wasn’t He? Because with His help, and a good (or even bad economy) we can still depend on dog hair for our living. And the dog hair future looks very good. God bless you.

I WAS THRILLED! Absolutely thrilled, when my name was announced as the winner,” exclaims an ecstatic Jackie Boulton. “I couldn’t believe what I had heard!”

The spectacular Winners Circle Contest was held at the 2005 Groom and Kennel Expo in Burbank, California. It is a tough competition that draws top-notch competitors from all over the world to pit their grooming talents against each other.

Each competitor was prepared to go all out in search of capturing the prestigious title. As the contestants went toe-to-toe, it was very evident that the Best of the Best were in the ring.

Every contestant was determined to produce the perfectly groomed dog. But in the end, it was the amazingly talented Jackie Boulton of Calgary, Canada, who emerged victorious.

Jackie has been grooming for nineteen years. She began as a brusher-bather in Calgary in 1986. Soon she was doing clipper work, and she progressed from there.

“I’m pretty much self-taught. I’ve never taken any formal lessons,” says Jackie. “I’m very visual. I learn by
watching.”

Her competitive career began in 1992, and so did her collection of trophies, awards and titles. “I went to Intergroom that year with a Kerry Blue Terrier and took a gold medal,” Jackie recalls happily. “That was it! I was hooked!”

“Every year that I have gone to Intergroom, I have won a medal,” she reports. “I love competing, and I plan to continue doing it for a long, long time!” Jackie now has sixteen medals in her Intergroom collection. What an achievement that is!

Jackie Boulton has a very impressive list of accomplishments. She has been nominated three times for the Cardinal Crystal Achievement Award for International Groomer of the Year. She has been a silver medallist at the Oster Invitational for the last two years.

Jackie has been a member of Groom Team Canada since 2001. She was named International Groomer of the Year at Intergroom in 1993 and 2003. And the list goes on and on with the 2005 Winners Circle victory being her latest.

Nature’s Specialties sponsored the Winners Circle Contest at the 2005 Groom and Kennel Expo. Mary Meeks, president of Nature’s Specialties, explains why her company is honored to support and sponsor grooming contests.

“Entering grooming competitions gives recognition to the groomers and it showcases their talents. They take pride in their efforts,” Mary emphasizes and continues. “Also, it gives confidence to their customers, which builds their grooming business.”

Jackie’s shop, Mucky Pups, in Calgary, Canada, is a prime example of that. They have five full-time groomers, and groom an average of about forty pets a day. They are so busy that they don’t even need to advertise.

“I consider myself a true ‘pet’ groomer,” Jackie states. “Although we groom to correct breed standards, we don’t do show trims. We are, first and foremost, pet groomers. That is important to me and I am quite proud of that.”

Jackie’s clients at the Mucky Pup are very impressed with all her accomplishments in the grooming contest ring. They are very supportive of her competitive efforts and love to look at all the trophies, medals and ribbons that adorn her grooming shop.
What was the actual Winner’s Circle competition like for Jackie Boulton?

“I was sweating bullets when I entered the ring,” confesses Jackie. “My dog had three months’ worth of hair.” Jackie’s entry was her own twelve-year-old miniature poodle, named Eli.

“Once I got in the competition ring, it went really well. I was very relaxed and didn’t worry about anything,” shares Jackie. “When the Sally Break (a fifteen minute break for the competitors and the dogs during the competition) came, I was happy with where I was and how my dog looked.”

After the break, Jackie unleashed all her creative energy and the magic flowed through her fingers as she sculpted Eli into a breath-taking example of perfection. The competition was intense and as the judges inspected one dog after another, the excitement mounted and the room was buzzing with anticipation. When Jackie was proclaimed as the winner, the crowd exploded with enthusiastic cheers and wild applause.

Jackie credits much of her success to the constant support of her husband, Brian. “I couldn’t do what I do without him,” she emphasizes. “He is my moral support, but also, he is always there to lend a hand to anyone who needs it. He is an awesome, awesome supporter and so helpful. He loves to go to the shows.” (Jackie hasn’t taught him to bathe and fluff-dry yet, but…)
Competing has many benefits that are not obvious to everyone. “I come back from competitions and seminars with all the latest and greatest equipment, and that’s a big advantage,” Jackie shares excitedly, “and I have learned so much from the other competitors.”

“I’ve been very successful and I owe it so much to the American groomers that have treated me like I was one of them,” states Jackie. “I never felt like an outsider and I’ve always felt very welcome.”

Jackie really loves competing and she encourages all groomers to give it a try. “Many groomers are afraid to enter grooming competitions,” says Mary Meeks of Nature’s Specialties, and quickly adds emphatically, “There are no losers when you compete. You always learn something more. You find out what you need to get better at, and it is a day of experience.”

Why don’t you give it a try and join the incredible Jackie Boulton in The Winners Circle?

The Grooming View: Money Making Additions Part 1

Add-on services can really help to increase your bottom line. They cost very little, just time and attention. Summer is a very busy season for everyone, but if you can incorporate some of the following ideas now, and the rest when the slow season arrives, your pocketbook will thank you.

Daycare. How many customers like to drop off their dogs early in the morning and leave them there all day without paying an extra dime? How about charging them an extra fee for daycare? You will have to walk the dog, give him water and make certain he’s comfortable. It takes time to do these things, not to mention cleaning and disinfecting the bowls. Plus, they are using a crate for eight hours that could be used for other dogs. This service should not be free! Imagine dropping off your son, daughter or spouse at the hairdresser early in the morning and not coming back until closing. Picture what would happen.

Teeth Cleaning. How often are you asked, “Is there anything you can do about his breath?” You can brush his teeth with a toothbrush that is kept in a plastic bag with his name on it or buy the throw-away ones for about 30¢ each in quantity. There are gels you can apply with small cloths wrapped around your fingers, and there are dental wipes. Some chew bones and biscuits freshen the breath. There is even an additive that is placed in the dog’s drinking water. Sell these items to the customer with an additional doggie toothbrush and toothpaste that comes in mint, beef, vanilla and poultry flavors.

If you’re the one who notices the bad breath, suggest your service, and also that they visit their vet for a professional cleaning. Don’t try to remove tartar from the teeth without checking your state law about scaling by a groomer. If you are made aware that Fluffy has just been to the vet for teeth cleaning or has an upcoming appointment, that’s a grand time to make the owner aware of your service and/or sell them your products, explaining to them that this will help to keep his teeth clean and his breath much fresher. (Barkleigh Productions sells a program on adding teeth brushing to your business. For more information, request Reader Service #1764.)

Boarding. A customer must leave her dog behind and would like to leave the dog with you. Take advantage of that! Some groomers take dogs home with them at night. Don’t ever leave them in your shop alone overnight in case of fire or some other catastrophe. You should charge more for this service than the local kennel because you are giving one on one attention and care.

Perhaps you already have a boarding facility. Or are considering one. Check into this because in most states you must be licensed and insured to have a public kennel.

Retailing. I would only suggest that you stock the items that YOU use. If you have more than one brand of anything, the customer immediately wants to know “What’s the best one?” or “Which one do you use?” and that’s the one you’ll sell and the rest will sit. Product that doesn’t move is a waste of money and space.

Check out the next issue of Groomer to Groomer for Part II of Money Making Additions. If you have other ideas and would like to share them, please email me at mareatully@yahoo.com.
See you on the road.

Cat grooming can be profitable
by Theresa Lask NCMG

Cat grooming can be a profitable service for any pet grooming salon. If you do not currently offer cat grooming services in your salon, you may want to consider adding them. Providing pet owners who have both a dog and cat the convenience of one-stop shopping is an excellent avenue for business growth. According to The Humane Society of the United States, there are approximately 65 million pet dogs in the United States and approximately 77.6 million pet cats. Clearly cats are a very popular companion animal, providing a potentially large client base for your salon.

There are many reasons stylists are hesitant to handle cats. The first that comes to mind is fear of being bitten. This is a valid reason to not handle cats or to restrict your cat clientele to only the best behaved.

As a salon owner, I never require my stylists to handle anything they are uncomfortable with, including cats. I would recommend that until you can safely restrain an upset cat, accept only the best behaved for grooming. In time, as your confidence and handling techniques grow, you can take on more challenging clients. Other reasons stylists exclude cats from their clientele may include allergy issues, a general lack of interest or simple dislike for felines. After all, we became pet stylists to work with the animals we love, so why groom something you don’t have a genuine affinity for?
Many small salons cannot set aside a separate room for the housing of cats during their stay. I feel it is important for cats to be comfortable. They are likely to become agitated if left too long in the company of barking dogs. To avoid this problem:
• Schedule your cat appointments for times when you can begin their grooming upon arrival.
• Ask that the owner provide a pet carrier.
• Designate a quiet area in your office or even under the front counter for cat carriers.
• Require that the cat be picked up as soon after completion as possible; all day is a long time to spend in a small carrier without a litter box.

Feline bone structure makes them especially difficult to restrain. They have 250 bones, which contribute to their flexibility. Compare that with 206 bones for the much larger human, and you can see why they are so flexible and supple. In addition, the shoulder assembly and pelvis are loosely attached to the spine. This is what gives them the ability to twist out of your hands or turn around in a tight area to defend themselves. Cats, unless they are overweight, have loose skin, so when an adversary has a hold on them, they can maneuver around to bite or scratch their opponent. A cat may very well view its stylist as an opponent, something to keep in mind at all times. Not only is understanding cat anatomy important, but a little cat psychology can make your job easier.

Even if you are comfortable grooming more difficult cat clients, you should still protect yourself. If available, enlist the help of a fellow groomer to aid in controlling a difficult cat. This is much safer than going it alone. Another option is the Groomers Helper (Reader Service Card #1733) dog and cat restraining system. I use the deluxe model for more difficult cats. A cat that previously required up to three people to groom can now be completed with little or no aid.

Muzzles are a necessary tool for grooming cats. Be sure to have a variety of sizes on hand. Muzzles are best put on the cat before it is so upset that it begins to bite. If you wait too long, it will become nearly impossible to safely put the muzzle on. For cats that swat and scratch, here is an effective tip; wrap the paws in vet wrap after the nails have been clipped. Otherwise, the nails will tear through and render the vet wrap useless.

In spite of these precautions, you can still end up with a cat bite. All puncture wounds should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. This type of wound swells shut quickly and traps bacteria, which can lead to infection. Keep an eye on scratches as well, checking for signs of infection. Do not let any suspicious injury go without treatment.

For stylists adding cat services or for those who are long-time cat groomers, felines have some special requirements that must be considered. Over the years I have picked up many tips and tools to help with the specialized handling of cats. The easiest to use is Feliway (Reader Service #1830) behavior modification pheromone spray. This is a spray used in the cat’s environment, not on the cat itself. This spray can have a dramatic calming effect on cats.
To use, mist your table and hands with Feliway before bringing the cat out to begin the grooming. It is also helpful in avoiding post-grooming bathroom accidents to mist the kennel before placing the finished cat inside to wait for pick up. When using a muzzle on an upset cat, spray a little Feliway on the outside of the muzzle and after it has completely dried (less than 1 minute), place the muzzle on the cat. Feliway is also available in a plug-in diffuser, which can be helpful in your cat kennel room to diminish overall stress.
I admire cat attitudes; even the most difficult cat has my respect. I feel sympathy for the cats that truly hate to be groomed. It appears to be an affront to their dignity to have some stranger style their hair. Most cats wait until after the grooming is complete, then sit in the kennel and “fix” their hair to suit themselves.

It is necessary that you appreciate the superiority complex cats naturally have. If nothing else, you have to smile at the indignant expression on their faces and the loud protests with which they plead their case. Pleading and indignant expressions aside, most cats need regular grooming to maintain a healthy coat.

Many cats are quick and easy bath and brush clients. Combing out as much dead hair as you can before the bath will prove helpful in making the bath both fast and efficient. Use cat specific shampoo to bathe all cats. Never use any product that does not state it is formulated specifically for cats. A cat’s skin is far more sensitive than a dog. It will more readily absorb toxic substances.

Always use caution with medicated or flea and tick products. Read the label and follow all instructions carefully. When using a flea and tick product, be sure to get a history of any pesticide products that have been used at home in the last ten to fourteen days. If you are uncertain about interactions between product ingredients, contact your veterinarian for advice before proceeding. Failure to ask these questions can lead to unintentional poisoning of an animal.

Place cotton in the ears of all cats before bathing and leave in during drying. This will keep water out of the ears in the bath and help make the noise in the drying area more tolerable. If your cat is agreeable to hand drying, use a dryer and a brush to dry and remove loose coat. If he is not agreeable about drying, comb through the coat and blot off as much water as possible with a clean towel. Kennel drying is the best option for these easily stressed cats. Use only room temperature dryers made specifically for kennel drying. Cats can quickly become overheated and experience serious health problems if not monitored during drying.
You may find that many of your cat owners will elect to skip the bath. If their pet only requires a thorough combing, you may use a no-rinse type product to spot clean or spritz lightly and comb through for an all-over coat freshener. This can also be an effective, less stressful solution for the hard-to-bathe cat.

However, if your cat client is dirty or about to receive a haircut, it is very important to bathe and completely dry the coat. Proper prep work on a cat is just as important to achieving a quality finish as proper prep work is on a Terrier or Poodle. To prepare the coat to be clipped, make certain it is clean, dry, and combed through. Always card the coat before you begin clipping. A finer finish will be achieved if you utilize carding, and you’ll have less post clipper scissor work.

When it is necessary to rework the coat after clipping, use a good pair of thinning shears. Thinning shears leave more room for error than regular scissors and will remove corduroy type clipper marks quickly. Thinning shears are the best tool to use for blending longer areas into the shorter clippered areas. They work well for a light trim on long-haired bath and brush cats, as well. Many owners may just want the chest and rear legs neatened up. Time to pull out the thinning shears and give them a try. You’ll love the results.

Don’t ignore your snap-on combs when clipping a cat. These time savers are great for leaving more length than a 10 or 7F blade with much less risk of cutting the skin. Unless a lion clip is the desired style, opt for a snap-on comb. Most cats require clipping against the lay of the coat for optimum results. On a cat with a very profuse coat, a long snap-on comb such as a #0 or a #A comb used against the lay of the coat leaves a cute, fuzzy, stuffed animal look that is much easier to keep up at home.

You may have to do some educating to train your clients to this way of thinking. Most believe for a clip to last any length of time it should be as short as possible. Speak with them about the health benefits of regular care and the pleasure of living with a well-groomed cat. If you love cats, their care may become a stylish and profitable addition to your salon services.

Question
By Bonnie Wonders

You probably can't count how many times it has happened to you. The phone rings and it is someone who is checking for prices on grooming. It all starts innocently enough. Let me give you a few of the most common scenarios of conversations between me and prospective customers:
Them: "How much does it cost to have a dog groomed?"
Me: "It depends on the dog."
Them: "What do you mean?"
Me: "Let me ask you a few questions first. What kind of dog is it?
Them: "I don't know.
Me: "Well, what does it LOOK like?"
Them: "I don't know... it's hairy... kinda big, but not real big. It looks like a dog... you know."
Me: "Does it look like a Cocker Spaniel, or a Collie or a Spitz?"
Them: "A Whatz?"
Me: "Spitz. (I know they're lost at this point)"
Them: "I don't know. It's just your average dog."
Me: How much would you say it weighs?"
Them: "Not too much."
Me: "Would you guess it weighs more than 50 pounds?"
Them: "Maybe. I think it's mostly hair though."
Me: "Is he good tempered?"
Them: "I guess so. He doesn't bite us or anything. He doesn't like the neighbor's kids though. He growls a lot at the mailman and he killed my wife's cat. On the whole, I'd say he's a good dog."
Me: "Has he ever been professionally groomed before?"
Them: "We cut the hair over his eyes a couple times and we gave him a bath last summer. Yeah, he's used to it."
Me: "Do you keep him brushed and combed or does he have a lot of undercoat?"
Them: "Heck yeah. My wife just did it a couple months ago. We want him all shaved off though. Naked as a jay bird. Just spare the family jewels...ha ha."
Me: "I can't give you an exact price without seeing him, but I'm guessing between $35-$50."
Them: "Holy cow! That's a lot of money. It's just a haircut. My barber doesn't charge me anywhere near that for MY haircut."
(And this is where we all say the same thing if we're smart.)
Me: And how much does he charge you when he cleans your ears and pulls the hair out of them? Cuts your toenails and fingernails, bathes you, dries you and then cuts your hair? Oh, and does your anal glands?"

At this point you hear the sweet sounds of silence. After another couple seconds you get a response…"I guess that sounds about fair," they say. Another scenario is the prospective customer wannabe. They have been either refused at their last groomer because of their constant complaining about the service and/or price. It does you no good to make snide remarks about the competition’s services. More times than not you find out for yourself why you were chosen to be the lucky recipient of their new business.

Mrs. Gross called to tell me about how she is shopping around for a new groomer.

"My old groomer won't return my calls," she is telling me. I left her umpteen messages and she is ignoring me." Just by the sheer sound of her voice I am guessing why she has been on the "forgotten" list. Yes, I ended up giving her an appointment. I have been stuck with this woman for several years now. She calls often at 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning. Thank God, I have caller ID and rent my business space. She will call sometimes ten or fifteen times before she finally leaves a message. Not that I am at work at that hour of the morning, but regardless, she persists in phoning. After the first dozen or so calls, she finally leaves her message.

"Buffy needs a haircut. Are you there????? Hello??? He needs it as soon as possible. Why aren't you answering your phone???"
I really don't think it occurs to her that I am snoring away at that time. Then she calls with a vengeance leaving a more urgent message each time. Geesh... it's a haircut that the dog needs! Not a kidney transplant!

Then there are those people with no sense of time at all when it comes to A.M. vs P.M. I give them an appointment for 1:00. Many will invariably say, "One in the afternoon?" Yes, I know, but I bite my tongue anyhow.

A lady called me one day in a near panic wondering what is wrong with her new dog. She was alarmed because she hadn't peed in four days. Did I think that was normal, or should she take her to the vet? When I asked her how she was so sure that she hadn't been going, her response was that she watched her every time she went outside and she hadn't "hiked up her leg against anything even once." Never mind that this was a female dog, and a puppy to boot.

Then there are the people who call at 4:55 in the afternoon and ask what time I am closing that day. I tell them 5:00. They then ask if I have time to groom their dog that same day...

"Do I have any cancellations?" they ask.
"Not for today," I tell them. I'm closing in five minutes.
"Well I can be there in twenty," they say.
"But I'm closing in five minutes," I repeat.
"I know, but I said I can be there in twenty... maybe even fifteen."
Some days I just give up....

How do you become a “sought after” groomer?

Sometimes the answer to becoming a sought-after groomer or making more money is not in raising prices, but in clearly defining your niche and your target market. It’s important that groomers think of their business as that, a business with ALL the aspects of a large business: Marketing, Research and Development, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, Shipping, etc.

Some other questions to consider might be: 1. Why should people seek me out above others in my area? 2. What is unique about the service/product that I provide to my customers that is not currently being provided by others in the area? 3. By whom do I want to be sought?

The advantages to having answered these questions fully is that you will have a better understanding of your business, of who you want your clients to be, and you can focus your marketing efforts on attracting those clients. Keep the customer you do attract happy with your unique products/services, and word of mouth will spread among your clearly defined target market. Not only will you be sought after, but also you will be sought by the people you want attracted to your business. Robert S. Fullmer, Four Wet Feet, San Francisco, CA

I go by what my customers ask for and then I have some customers who leave it up to me to decide the best cut for their pet. That is how I get more customers. If they like what I do, then they recommend me to their friends and family. Lorena Martin, Whitehall Animal Country Club, Bloomington, Indiana

I treat the pets with gifts after every visit. It may be nibbles to take home, toys or sparkles on their fur, and always with a bandanna or bow. Sometimes I take photos of their pets during holidays and mail them to the pets. Cheryl Montiagne, Massanutten Animal clinic, Harrisonburg, VA

All the dogs that come to me are really excited about being there and hate to leave because I treat them like my own. I love dogs and everyone knows it, so I have built up a good business in a small town in a year and a half. I have about 300 steady customers now and a lot of shave downs in the summer months, so just keep trying and you’ll get there. Connie Graves, Pampered Pet Salon, Guthrie, Oklahoma

Even if we are doing a strip, we make sure every hair is trimmed well and the dog gets a very beautiful face, because that is what the owner will see… his dog’s beautiful face. Debra Ray, Best Friends Pet Salon, Salem, Oregon

When I bought my own shop, it came with an existing client list of a little over 100. Now I have about 350 active clients. After the first eight months, I stopped all advertising and still continue to get more clients through referrals. I think good customer relations is the key to success.
If clients like you, and they know the dog goes home stress free, they will send friends and family. I make a big deal about greeting the dog when they come in. I always have treats in my pocket and hand out special gifts for the holidays. A lot of clients tell me they are as excited as the dog is when it’s time for their appointment. Toni Worrick, Best Friends Grooming, Stockertown, PA

Be knowledgeable in your profession about pet care and be able to answer your clients’ questions. Be able to offer suggestions on coat care, etc. And, very importantly, find a niche for your business.
Do you work pets straight through and offer one on one service? Do you have very flexible operation hours? Do you offer day sitting? Anything that sets you apart from your competition is to be promoted. And, believe it or not, raising prices makes you more sought after! People value more what they pay more for. Elaine Chelak, Groomingdales, Colonia, NJ

Be confident, be happy and let the customer know they are always getting your best!!!

In order to become a “sought after” groomer, my best advice is to become the most knowledgeable groomer around. Be prepared to talk to your customers about alternatives to shave downs; be able to explain advantages and disadvantages. The more knowledgeable you are, the more they will trust your judgment. Read everything you can get your hands on. Take pictures of your best grooming jobs and share them with your clients. Attend the seminars, frame and hang your “certificates of attendance,” share your seminar stories (I just returned from a seminar and you wouldn’t believe what I learned there!). Get certified via the various organizations and hang THOSE certificates on your “brag wall.” And, by all means, keep a CLEAN shop. I am, by no measure, the most talented groomer around, but I do stay busy because I provide outstanding service and I have proven that I genuinely care about my clients and their pets. Sherry A. Robbins, owner, MoonDoggies Grooming & Design, LLC, Hamilton, OH

By giving the clients the haircut they want and doing it safely, timely and in a clean and friendly atmosphere, you will be an “in demand” groomer. Trudy Wisner, Paws R Us Inc., Brooklyn, NY

I feel that to be a sought after groomer takes time and word of mouth. I am a perfectionist. I tell my customers and feel the extra time that I take is worth it. I do not hurry to get fourteen dogs done in a day. I charge more so I can do the best job I can without stressing out the dog and myself. Sue Hoette, Scruffy to Fluffy Mobile Dog Grooming, St. Louis, MO

You can become a sought after groomer by becoming certified, doing a quality job and receiving word of mouth referrals. Honesty and integrity are your best assets. Let your clients know you are able to do more than just a shave. Bring your own dog to show them the kind of work you are capable of. Try to set up regular appointments, i.e… every 4-6 weeks. Kathy Davis, Critter Care Mobile

As far as being a “sought after” groomer, you must first be a knowledgeable one. Don’t see yourself as “just a groomer”; you are an artist, a pet STYLIST! Project that image! Get out in the public and show yourself. Get to the seminars as often as possible, perhaps even try the competition ring. Even if you don’t place, you walk out with a wealth of knowledge about your grooming that you didn’t have before. Never stop learning, and never stop trying to find ways to improve yourself.

Volunteer for local shelters, or if you own your own business, sponsor local pet events where your name is put out there. Give your clients incentive to refer you and offer a referral discount program. Get to know your fellow groomers in the area and network with them.

I think it’s so silly we are so afraid to talk to each other, and instead see each other as competition when we could be helping each other out! There could be a groomer in your area that just hates doing certain breeds that you like to do and specialize in, and perhaps there are ones that you don’t like that the other groomer is good at. You can refer clients to each other and make your work more pleasant. Beth Haire, Maw N Paws Mobile Grooming, Spring, TX

As far as becoming a sought after groomer, first continue your education to become the best groomer you can become. Attend as many grooming shows as time and money permit. If you only learn one thing at a show, it was well worth the time, money and effort. Develop a niche market. Specialize in a service that your local competitors are lacking in. And above all, demand great customer service from yourself and your staff. New customers have told me that after four or five calls to grooming shops, they chose my shop due to the phone manners that my manager displayed. This was their first impression of my business, and once we get them in for their first visit, they are hooked with our customer service and follow-up protocol. Hope this helps. Good luck and good grooming. Florida

Make yourself and your salon a star business of the community with lots of extra service activity. I am certain there are beauty parlors in your town, some below average, mediocre chains, and the posh one that the elite customer brags about patronizing. Charge what each pet is worth, regardless of breed. Time spent should equal fees charged. Electricians and plumbers do it that way. Good luck to you. A Mobile Pet Groomer, Marcia Hill, Moreno Valley, CA

Becoming a “sought after groomer” is a combination of many things, experience, people skills, handling dogs, work environment, attitude, presentation – it does not come overnight, but takes years of building integrity and trust. Suzy Ferguson, Shear Designz Canine Stylist, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Communicate with your customer on exactly the look they would like for their dog and then act on it! My biggest complaint from new customers is… “Every time I go to a groomer I tell them what I want and they do whatever they want anyway!” Be different and listen… then you will be sought after. Linda Lombardi, The Scissor Wizard Dog Grooming, Dunedin, Florida.

Even when doing shave downs, if you take the time to make certain the trim is neat and doesn’t have track lines, the word will spread on what a great job you do. After all, if this is what the client wants, then they will be happy when you do a good job of it. Diane Betelak, Heads and Tails Prof. Dog Grooming, Liverpool, NY

If your work puts you in demand, call yourself a “canine stylist” and set higher fees, promoting your reputation. Publicize your attendance at learning seminars and shows, put pictures of yourself and your best groomers on the wall, with resumes, diplomas, accreditations, accomplishments and wins. Do a client newsletter, featuring groomed pets and news on yourself and your staff. Send it to local veterinarians. Send news releases to local newspapers.
Knowing that superior work will create some demand, your next job is to publicize your business, and to convince clients that you’re worth what you’re charging. That’s marketing, and it is as important as doing a good job. It’s no use being good if few know it. Blow your own horn! Caroline Roden.

Plucky Pioneer Groomer Trailblazes into the Future

“Your mission is to boldly go where no one has gone before.” Do you think that only the crewmembers of the Starship Enterprise have heard these words? Well, they could also have been said to Theresa Wells, one of the first women to pioneer into the grooming and business world.

Do you know anyone with such a passion and love for their career, that even after six decades in it, they look forward to each day with joyful anticipation?

Theresa Wells is that lady. This incredible gal has a fascinating tale of what the grooming world was like in its infancy, the struggles she had to overcome as a woman business owner, and of the amazing grooming world advances she has experienced.

Theresa’s love for animals was evident at a very young age. Her sister, who was sixteen years older than Theresa, raised Poodles. She loved to dress them up and make them pretty. When she was about nine years old, Theresa picked up a pair of clippers and learned to do face, feet, and tail. That was the beginning of her incredible adventure into the wild and wonderful world of grooming.

And, she was business minded from the start. “When I was about ten years old, I would go around our neighborhood,” recalls Theresa. “When I would see a dog in its own backyard, I would take it to my home, bath it and pretty it up… and then,” she admits with a hearty chuckle, “I would take it back to its home and tell the owners that they owed me money!”

Theresa grew up and got married. But she stayed in tune with the dog world by going to dog shows and caring for her own rescued Poodles.

Sadly, Theresa’s husband died in 1960, leaving her with four small children to care for. In 1963, she began grooming full time.

In those days it was rare for a woman to be seen in the workplace. “No one would rent space to me for a grooming shop” she said.
Undaunted, Theresa got a job grooming at a veterinary office - but, “I had to enter and leave by the back door,” states Theresa, “because the veterinarians didn’t want anyone to know that a woman was clipping their pets. The dogs were brought back for me to groom, and I never saw the owners.”

“At that time, full hand-scissored grooms were about eight dollars, of which I received half,” Theresa recalls, adding, “And, there were no curved shears, high velocity dryers, or other time-saving equipment back then.”

After a couple of years, Theresa was able to find a location to rent and she became the first businesswoman in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area. Securing a location was only the first of many hurdles that she was to overcome.

Next, Theresa decided that she needed a catchy name for her shop. She decided to call it “The Clip Joint,” a name it still bears today.
Then, she needed a source for supplies. “Oh, there were suppliers - but in the 1960’s grooming was very male-dominated and no one wanted to do business with a woman Theresa states emphatically. “Fortunately, I had a friend who was a barber, and he helped me get products.”

Early grooming equipment was limited. “I had a pair of Oster A-2 clippers and a couple pair of Double Duck scissors,” she states. “My first grooming table was a cut-off kitchen table with a cabinet on top of it.”

The Clip Joint flourished. “Yes, I became very successful,” admits Theresa, “but I worked hard and put in many long hours. And,” she adds, “I’ve always subscribed to the John Smith Law, which is: If you don’t work, you don’t eat!”

The first seminar that Theresa ever attended was about 1970 and was held in Saddlebrook, New Jersey. Even in the grooming world’s infancy, Theresa knew the importance of continuing education.

“Educate yourself,” Theresa advises. “There is always a better way to do things. Someone always knows something that you don’t.” Theresa and her three daughters can often be seen together at seminars.

“I give Sally Liddick and Gwen Shelly so much credit for the tremendous advancements of the grooming industry,” exclaims Theresa. “It has been through their efforts, hard work, and visions for the future that the grooming industry has progressed so far so fast.”

“They invented the Groom-O-Grams, created the Groomer To Groomer magazine, and put their heart and soul into producing educational seminars and trade shows that catapulted our industry from the Stone Age into the future!” Theresa continues. “Sally knew the needs of groomers. She was a groomer herself, as was her mother before her.”

At one early Groom Expo, Theresa met Sally Liddick’s mother, Sarah Stanton, and found that they had a lot in common. Theresa and Sarah were both involved in a male-dominated business, both loved what they were doing, both had daughters who were groomers, and the first year they met - they were amazed to find out that they each had made and brought collar and leash covers to the Expo.

That encounter led Theresa to expand her career in a new direction and perfect the talents that had their beginnings when she dressed up dogs as a child. She began to make doggie bandannas.
“I am a compulsive person, and everything has to be perfect,” states Theresa. “I just hated bandannas that were cut with pinking shears. After a short while, they just looked like rags around the dogs’ necks. I purchased a serger, and that was the start of it. I love, love, love making bandannas - I am consumed with it,” confesses Theresa. “I feel that I am an artist. Now, I am known as The Bandanna Queen.”

One area that Theresa is very enthused about is groomer licensing. “I think licensing is a wonderful thing,” affirms Theresa. “Licensing protects groomers and upgrades their professionalism. It is only through seminars and continuing education that knowledge can be brought to everyone. And as we all know, knowledge is power.”

What are some of the important advances that Theresa has witnessed in the grooming profession? “Oh, my goodness,” she says excitedly, “the camaraderie that groomers have with each other now is amazing! That was totally unheard of in the early days. Groomers did not even speak to each other - let alone get together and share knowledge and ideas.”

All three of Theresa’s daughters have followed in their mother’s paw prints er… footsteps. Her daughter, Janice, is a mobile groomer in Lexington, Kentucky. She owns Janice and G’s Groomobile. Daughter Patty owns Animal Crackers in Accident, Maryland. And Florence is still with the family business, The Clip Joint in Baltimore.

Florence wasn’t planning to become a groomer. “I love animals,” Florence explains, “but I didn’t want to get dirty. I planned to become the first woman dentist with a pain-free practice.”
As fate would have it, Florence did not become a dentist. She became the owner of The Clip Joint in Baltimore, Maryland - the business her mother Theresa started in 1970. Florence has been grooming for thirty-five years. The Clip Joint still caters to many of its original clients, and also their children and grandchildren.

“The majority of our clients book their appointments a year in advance,” states Florence. “We give each client a calendar, and put little bone-shaped stickers on the day they have their appointment, and we call them the night before each appointment to remind them.”

Florence is famous for her pet makeovers. “I think that a good groomer can look at a pet and see what will look best for them,” she explains.

Florence eagerly attends seminars, in search of equipment and knowledge to keep her at the top of her game. As a matter of fact, about six weeks after Florence took a CPR course at Groom Expo in Hershey, she had both the worst and best day of her grooming career.

Florence was grooming a cat one day at The Clip Joint when it suddenly went bezerk. It attacked Florence, sank its fangs into her hand, all the while screaming, growling and raking her with -tion of slowing down!

To Shave or Not to Shave

Using clippers on Lab-like breeds is not normal or natural. But as a professional pet stylist, I do have many requests to shave them because of shedding in the home or owner allergies to the shedding coat. Always remember when taking them short that you are removing the pet’s protection from the sun, so after the procedure recommend that the owner keep the pet shaded from the sun to prevent burning.

You also change the shedding cycle by removing the weight of the coat. You will want to remove a small amount of dead coat before shaving using an undercoat rake. A fine stripping knife can be used after clipping to help the remaining dead hair to be shed out. Just a few minutes gently gliding over skin can be helpful in preventing clogged pores.

The clippers I like to use for thick double-coated breeds is a higher power, higher speed clipper with 4000 plus strokes per minute. I prefer to use the 7F blade against the growth of the coat. It leaves a smooth, clean finish. The 7F can be purchased as an additional blade to your clippers. Most clippers come with a #10 blade, which I use on the inside and outside of ears, with the growth of coat, because you never want to go backward with a blade on the ear. I also use the #10 blade in pads and on tummy areas. I call it a Smoothy.

Hope this helps,
Chris Pawlosky

Andis Introduces New Sizes in Ceramicedge™ Blades

Andis has introduced its CeramicEdge™ Blades in two new sizes – 3/4” HT and 5/8” HT, which leave hair 3/4” or 19 mm long and 5/8” or 16 mm long, respectively. The patent pending ceramic cutter on the blade is designed by Andis®. This cutter is more durable than imported ceramics and stays up to 75% cooler than steel cutters.

“Our CeramicEdge™ blades are ideal for most scissor and drop-coated breeds,” notes Fred Koeller, Vice President of Marketing at Andis Company. “These blades leave a plush finish in less than half the time it takes with steel cutters. You can now accomplish scissored show trims easily with clippers; non-scissored legs never looked so good, so quickly. The CeramicEdge™ blades are a great alternative to fumbling with attachment combs, and the blades feed into the hair better than an attachment comb does.”

Additionally, cats’ digestive systems are not geared for carbohydrate metabolism. With these important facts in mind, Natura Pet Cat & Kitten announces Innova Evo, which has not only the highest protein of any cat food on the market, but also is completely grain free. Innova Evo closely approximates the ingredients, nutritional profile and feeding benefits of the typical raw food diet in a safe, sanitary, nutritionally complete and low cost manner.
